How to use AI to make a packing list for a short trip

Write down where you go, how many nights, the weather, what you will do and your bag limit. Paste those into ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude with the prompt in this guide and ask for a short list grouped by category. Then ask it what you can skip and check the list against your own bag. About 10 minutes, free.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Collect five trip facts

Write down where you go, how many nights, the weather forecast, what you will do each day and your bag limit. Check the forecast in your weather app and the bag rules on your airline's or train company's own page, because the AI cannot see them for you.

  2. Step 2: Open a chat and paste the prompt

Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude and paste the prompt with your facts in place of the [square brackets]. Do not add passport numbers, booking codes or your home address.

    Prompt to copy
I am packing for [4 nights in Lisbon in mid-November]. I will [walk a lot, have one nice dinner and visit a museum]. The forecast is [10 to 17 degrees Celsius, rain on two days]. I have [one carry-on bag, 10 kg limit] and [no washing machine]. Make a packing list grouped by clothes, toiletries, tech and documents. Give exact quantities, keep it under [30] items, and say which things I can skip. If you need to know anything else first, ask me.

Tip: Exact numbers (nights, kilos, degrees) make the list shorter and more useful than "a week away".

  3. Step 3: Or attach a screenshot of the forecast

If typing it all is slow, attach a screenshot of your forecast or your booking. In ChatGPT, tap the + icon in the prompt area and select Add photos & files. In Gemini on the web, sign in, click Add files, then Upload Files. In Claude, click the + button in the lower left corner of the chat box. Hide names and booking codes first.

  4. Step 4: Ask it to cut the list down

First lists are usually too long. Ask what you can leave out, and what you can wear twice.

    Prompt to copy
Cut this list by a third. Tell me what I can wear twice, what I can buy there if I forget it, and what is worth keeping for [rain].
  5. Step 5: Check it against your own bag

Ask for a checklist, then lay your things out before you pack. Weigh the bag if your airline has a weight limit. The AI does not know what you own or what the airline weighs, so you make the final call.

    Prompt to copy
Turn the final list into a checklist with one item per line, grouped by [what goes in my carry-on and what goes in my coat pockets].

What you get

Clothes: 2 pairs of trousers (wear one, pack one), 4 tops, 1 smart outfit for dinner, 1 warm jumper, 1 waterproof jacket, 5 pairs of underwear and socks, comfortable walking shoes (wear them). Toiletries: travel-size toothpaste, deodorant, 1 small shampoo. Tech: phone, charger, plug adapter, small power bank. Documents: passport, ID, booking confirmations saved offline. You can skip: a second pair of shoes, an umbrella if your jacket has a hood, and books (use your phone).

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the numbers. Without nights, kilos and the forecast, the AI gives a long, generic list.
  • Sharing private details. Leave out passport numbers, booking codes and your home address.
  • Trusting the weather from the AI. Check your own weather app and airline page, then give the AI those facts.
  • Not trimming. Ask for a shorter list, then pack from your own wardrobe.

Questions people ask

Which AI app is best for packing lists?

Any of ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can do it. The prompt works the same in each, so use the one you already have.

Is it free?

You can start free. OpenAI's help page says image inputs are available on Free and paid ChatGPT plans, subject to usage limits. Gemini uploads need you to be signed in.

Does the AI know the weather?

Do not count on it. Look up the forecast yourself and put it in the prompt.

Can it handle a trip with kids?

Yes. Add each child's age and say what you already own, and ask for a list per person.

Will it know my airline's bag rules?

Not reliably. Check the airline's own page and give the AI the size and weight limit.
