ChatGPT will be able to end chats that fixate on violence, OpenAI says

On 30 October 2026, OpenAI announced new ChatGPT safety limits. ChatGPT will be able to end a chat that shows fixation on violence, and may pause an account after repeated cases. It will give less detail about past mass attacks to everyone, and limit weapons information for teens. The changes roll out over the next few weeks.

What did OpenAI announce?

On 30 October 2026, OpenAI published a post on community safety with two announcements: a new Community Safety Report, and more restrictions around firearms content for minors.

OpenAI says that when a conversation shows signs that someone is fixating on violence or the idea of seriously harming another person, ChatGPT will be able to automatically end the chat. If ChatGPT ends multiple chats for that reason, OpenAI says it may temporarily pause the account.

What changes for everyone who uses ChatGPT?

ChatGPT will give less detail about past mass attacks and the people who carried them out, even when that detail is available elsewhere online. OpenAI says the limits cover reconstructions of attacks, the weapons and equipment used and how they were obtained, and comparisons of scale of harm that could amplify an attacker's notoriety.

OpenAI says the limits apply regardless of a user's age or reason for asking. People can still ask ChatGPT to help them understand these events, how victims and communities were affected, and how to recognise warning signs and prevent violence.

What changes for teens?

OpenAI says it is placing further limits on the weapons-related information teens can receive, even when a question appears harmless. It extends this to practical information about weapons and security systems that could be misused.

ChatGPT estimates whether a user is under 18 from signals such as behaviour patterns. OpenAI says anyone wrongly placed in the under-18 experience can confirm they are an adult through Persona, its age verification partner. OpenAI is also working on notifications to parents if their teen's account is paused for repeatedly discussing violence.

How many threats does OpenAI report to the police?

OpenAI says it made over 200 law enforcement referrals in Q3 2026, for imminent threats of violence. It says its first Community Safety Report will come in early 2027, covering the second half of 2026, with updates every six months after that.

Why does it matter?

ChatGPT is one of the world's most widely used AI products, so a rule change reaches a lot of people. Some chats will now be cut off, and some topics will get shorter answers. These are OpenAI's own rules, announced by the company itself.

What's next?

OpenAI says the safeguards begin rolling out in the next few weeks and that it will keep refining them. Its first Community Safety Report is due in early 2027.
