What are Google Play personal apps?

Google says you can use Google AI Studio to "vibe code" a custom Android app, which means describing what you want in words and letting AI write the app. Through Google Play you can then launch that app on your own device, according to Google's announcement.

The app stays private, secure and separate from the public store catalogue.

Who can use it, and what do you need?

You only need a standard Google account. Google says no developer account is required. The feature starts rolling out on 13 October in select markets, including the US, for users 18 and over.

TechCrunch reports that the apps must still follow Google Play's existing policies.

Can you share a personal app?

Not yet. Google says that in the coming months you will be able to share your personal apps with a close circle of friends and family.

If you later want to share an app with the world, Google Play helps you move to a professional developer account. The app then goes through the same Trust and Safety reviews and quality standards as every professional developer's.

What else did Google Play announce?

Google also announced Game Finder, an AI-powered way to find games that match your taste, and an update to Ask Play that can compare apps side by side. Google Play apps and games will also appear in Gemini conversations, which Google says will start rolling out to all Gemini users soon.

Why does it matter?

TechCrunch notes that until now, using an app of your own on your own Android device meant publishing it to Google Play. Now a personal project can stay a personal project.

What's next?

Sharing with close friends and family arrives in the coming months. Google has not listed every country in the first rollout, so check whether yours is included.
