What is the Gemini agent?

The Gemini agent is what Google Cloud calls a single, universal agent for work. Google says it answers questions, handles knowledge work, creates images and media, and writes and runs code, all from one prompt box.

It was announced on 8 October 2026 at Gemini at Work 2026.

How does the Gemini agent work?

Google says you give it objectives, not instructions. It plans the work, uses skills and tools, connects to a company's systems and brings back something finished inside the documents, the inbox and the developer tools people already use.

Work can keep running in the cloud for hours or days after you close your laptop. It can also create temporary sub-agents for multi-step jobs.

You give it objectives, not instructions.

Can the Gemini agent have its own email address?

Yes. Google says you can describe a role and Gemini creates a coworker agent. It gets its own Workspace account, including an email address, a calendar and a Drive, and a place in the company directory.

Colleagues can add it to a Chat space, mention it, or tag it in a document comment. TechCrunch reports that its actions are written to an audit trail attributed to the agent, not to a person.

Which apps and models does it use?

Google says it works in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar, and from the web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, the command line, Microsoft 365 and Slack. It can connect to tools such as Jira, Salesforce, BigQuery and Snowflake, and to any MCP server.

It chooses the best model for each job. Today that means Google's Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude models, with other open and private models planned.

Who gets the Gemini agent and what does it cost?

TechCrunch reports that Google will focus on businesses first and roll the agent out to consumers later. Google says it has built-in cost controls, including multi-model orchestration, Smart Routing and real-time spend caps.

Early testers included the sportswear brand On, Shopify and PayPal. In the coverage we read, Google did not give a price or a date for consumers.

Why does it matter?

Most AI tools wait for a question. This one is built to take a task, work on it and report back, which changes how people may use AI at work. Google also says nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 already use Gemini Enterprise.

What's next?

Watch for when the agent reaches ordinary users, and for how companies handle an AI that has its own email and access to their data.
