What are OpenAI dots?

OpenAI introduced dots on 29 September 2026 as always-on agents inside ChatGPT. OpenAI's announcement says each dot is powered by GPT-6 Astra, has its own cloud computer, learns from feedback over time, and can work towards your goals 24/7.

Most chatbots answer one message and wait for the next. A dot is meant to keep going: you give it a goal, and it works on it in the background, even while you are away.

How does a dot work?

Each dot works with its own cloud computer, its own browser and the apps you connect. Through OpenAI's plugins it can connect to over 4,000 apps, and OpenAI says it can take on a project and run with it while working on several others.

You can reach your dot in ChatGPT, Slack or Teams, or hop on a voice call. OpenAI gives an example from an early tester, whose dot noticed he had forgotten to invoice a publication, prepared the invoice, and sent it after his approval.

Can a dot act without asking you?

Dots start with built-in rules for when to act on their own and when to ask for approval. With Custom Rules, you can allow specific actions, require approval for them, or block them, and you can open your dot's computer at any time to check its work.

On personal ChatGPT plans, you can control whether dots' conversations and work are used to improve OpenAI's models. OpenAI says it does not use content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspaces to improve its models by default.

Who can use dots, and how much do they cost?

Dots are rolling out in ChatGPT to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. The first dot is included in a Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost, and plans include an allowance for deeper work, with extended limits for the first month after launch.

Enterprise users, including Edu and Healthcare, can try a beta when their workspace admin enables it. To start, you create your first dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser; after setup, you can message it from the ChatGPT mobile app.

Why does it matter?

Chatbots wait for you to ask. Agents keep working while you are away. If dots work as OpenAI describes, everyday tasks that take many small steps could run in the background, which changes how people use AI at work.

What's next for dots?

OpenAI says it plans to expand dots to more users soon and envisions teams of dots working together on your behalf. It is also previewing specialist dots for organisations, with their own identity for access management and deep integrations with company systems.

Questions people ask

Are OpenAI dots free?

The first dot is included in a ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost, according to OpenAI. The announcement does not list a separate price for dots.

What model do OpenAI dots use?

Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI says.

Can a dot do things without my permission?

Dots follow built-in rules for when to act on their own and when to ask first. Custom Rules let you allow, require approval for, or block specific actions.

Where can I talk to my dot?

In ChatGPT, Slack or Teams, and by voice call. You set it up in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser, then can message it from the ChatGPT mobile app.
