Anthropic reports early progress using Claude in drug development

On 27 October 2026, Anthropic reported early progress using Claude in drug development. Its scientists worked with six drug developers, including Bristol Myers Squibb, and it has started drug programs of its own. Anthropic says the work is early and mostly preclinical, so nothing has been tested in humans yet.

The short version

  • 01Anthropic's life sciences team worked with six drug developers over the past several months.
  • 02At Enveda, Claude cut human review time for manufacturing records by 89%, Anthropic says.
  • 03Anthropic acquired Mithril Medicine, a one-person company working on two rare forms of muscular dystrophy.
  • 04Anthropic says the work is mostly preclinical: it is not yet at the stage of testing in humans.
  • 05It expects a Mithril drug could start human trials as soon as late 2028, if the results hold.

What did Anthropic announce?

On 27 October 2026, Anthropic published an update on its work to accelerate drug development with Claude. Over the past several months, it says, its scientists engaged in deep research partnerships with six organizations developing new medicines: BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines and The Column Group.

Anthropic says it has also begun drug discovery efforts of its own, and plans to scale this work up substantially.

What did Claude actually do?

Anthropic gives several examples. At Divergence Labs, which is working on a treatment for food allergies, Claude converted goals into a design plan and, largely autonomously, generated roughly 35,000 antibody designs in about a month.

At BigHat Biosciences, the lab made and tested about 1,010 variants of two drug leads in about 10 weeks, and Anthropic says the best versions bound more than 10 times more tightly than the originals.

At Generate Biomedicines, six scientists used Claude Code to propose new designs for part of a cancer therapy. Anthropic says one design was about 70% shorter than the standard version and, in lab tests, was more effective.

How much paperwork time did it save?

At Enveda, manufacturing chemists spent up to 75% of their time on paperwork, Anthropic says. Enveda connected its manufacturing documents to Claude to flag possible issues.

Across 1,061 pages of documentation, Claude caught all 11 issues that human reviewers had spotted and flagged seven they had missed. Anthropic says this cut human review time by 89%, from over 25 hours to less than three.

What is Mithril Medicine?

Anthropic says it acquired Mithril Medicine, a one-person company developing treatments for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy. Its founder, Cody Tranbarger, used Claude to organize contracts, logistics and experiments with 11 external labs.

Anthropic says Mithril took a possible treatment for one form of the disease from an idea to promising results in mice in less than 18 months. Tranbarger now works at Anthropic.

Is any of this a medicine yet?

No. Anthropic says all of this research is still at an early stage and mostly preclinical, meaning it is not yet at the stage where drugs are tested in humans.

If the Mithril drug candidates continue to hold up, Anthropic expects a drug could be ready to start clinical trials in humans as soon as late 2028.

Why does it matter?

AI labs are moving from answering questions to taking part in the work of drug research, from design to paperwork. The results so far come from Anthropic's own account and its partners, not independent trials.

What's next?

Anthropic says it plans to scale this work up substantially, to work with more biotechnology firms, and to extend Claude's role into clinical trials as programs advance.

Questions people ask

Which companies is Anthropic working with on drugs?

Anthropic names six: BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines and The Column Group.

Has Claude created a new medicine?

Not yet. Anthropic says the work is early and mostly preclinical, so nothing has been tested in humans.

What is Mithril Medicine?

A one-person company developing treatments for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy, which Anthropic says it acquired.

When could a drug reach human trials?

Anthropic expects a drug from its Mithril work could be ready to start human trials as soon as late 2028, if the candidates continue to hold up.
