What did Google Cloud and OpenAI announce?

Google Cloud said on 21 October 2026 that it is "launching OpenAI models in Google Cloud's model garden". OpenAI's own newsroom lists the same news, describing frontier models and Codex workflows coming to Gemini's Model Garden through Google Cloud Marketplace.

Google also says it is now the only hyperscale cloud offering access to all three leading closed-source language models, alongside more than 200 first-party, third-party and open models.

Which OpenAI models are coming?

Google lists three. GPT-6 Astra is designed for demanding work across coding, computer use, professional tasks and scientific research. GPT-6.1 Sol offers near-Astra intelligence at lower cost. GPT-6 Luna is a fast, cost-efficient model for everyday work at scale.

Who can use them, and how do they pay?

The models are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers, with more coming soon. Others can express interest through a form Google links.

OpenAI models are sold directly through Google Cloud Marketplace, so usage appears on one Google Cloud invoice and can draw down existing cloud commitments. Customers can also connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to Google's platform.

What about data and security?

Google says prompts, context and outputs stay within the customer's data perimeter and are never used to train foundation models. Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute are listed as coming soon.

Why does it matter?

Companies that already run on Google Cloud can now try OpenAI's models next to Google's own and others, without a separate contract. It is aimed at businesses, not at ChatGPT or Gemini app users.

What's next?

Google says OpenAI models will also come to Gemini for business and Google Antigravity. It gave no date for wider access.
