What is Apple HomeView?

HomeView is a smart display for the home. Apple says it brings music, FaceTime calls, home monitoring and smart home controls together in one place, according to Apple's announcement.

It has a 7-inch Liquid Retina display on a domed speaker base. It comes in four colours: silver, starlight, rose pink and space gray. A separate wall-mounted model comes in space gray and silver.

What is Siri AI?

Apple calls Siri AI "an entirely new version of Siri" that is more capable and conversational. Apple says it has broad world knowledge, so anyone in the home can ask it about almost any topic.

With a paired iPhone or iPad that has Apple Intelligence, Siri AI can also use personal context, such as your Calendar and Messages. Apple says Siri AI is in beta in HomeView software version 27.2.

How does HomeView recognise people, and what about privacy?

HomeView can recognise up to six people by their face. Each person gets their own home screen with apps and widgets. Messages and Calendar content appears only when the enrolled person is recognised and their paired iPhone or iPad is present and recently unlocked.

Apple says camera and microphone data is processed in Secure Exclaves, which are separate from the rest of the system. Apple says Siri requests use on-device processing or its Private Cloud Compute.

How much does HomeView cost, and where can you buy it?

In the US it costs $299, for the tabletop and the wall-mounted model. Apple's wall mounts from Schneider Home cost extra, from $59.95.

Pre-orders started on 13 October. Both models are on sale from 13 November in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Singapore pre-orders start on 15 October, and South Africa goes through Apple Authorized Resellers.

Apple says HomeView is not available for sale in the EU, as Siri AI is currently unavailable in iOS there.

What are the limits?

Setup needs a compatible iPhone or iPad. Personal answers need a paired iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence turned on. Apple adds that some Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models have daily usage limits, and expanded access will be available for a fee in the future.

Why does it matter?

Apple's new Siri AI now has a screen of its own in the home. Apple says even people without an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad get Siri AI's world knowledge and conversations on HomeView, though it does more with one.

What's next?

HomeView ships on 13 November. Apple has not said when Siri AI will reach the EU.
