How to use AI to make a fair weekly chore chart for your family

List who lives at home, how much time each person has and the jobs that need doing, then paste our prompt into Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude. The AI builds a weekly chore chart as a table, with a fair split by age and free time. Check it, ask for changes, then copy it or export it. It takes about five minutes.

You needWho lives at home, their ages, and a rough list of weekly jobs

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Write down who and what

Before you open the app, jot down each person's first name or role, age group and busy days, then the jobs that repeat every week. Use first names or roles like Mum, Dad and Teen, not full names or addresses.

Tip: Add one thing that matters to someone, such as 'Sam has football on Tuesdays'. It is what makes a chart fair.

  2. Step 2: Open your AI app and paste the prompt

Open Gemini at gemini.google.com, ChatGPT, or Claude at claude.ai, and start a new chat. Gemini's help page says some features work without signing in, but you must sign in to export. Change the words in [brackets], then send.

    Prompt to copy
Make a fair weekly chore chart for my household.

People: [Mum, 40, works days; Dad, 42, works shifts; Maya, 14; Leo, 8].
Busy times: [Maya has swimming on Tuesday evenings; Leo goes to bed at 8pm].
Jobs that repeat: [cooking dinner, washing up, laundry, bins, vacuuming, tidying the living room, feeding the dog].

Rules: give each person a similar total of time, give younger children easy and safe jobs only, never put the same hard job on the same person two weeks in a row, and leave one day a week with no jobs.

Show the result as a table with days across the top and people down the side, and add the minutes each job should take.

  3. Step 3: Check that it is fair

Add up the minutes for each person and look for jobs that are too hard or unsafe for the youngest. Then tell the AI what to change. It will rebuild the table.

    Prompt to copy
Please change this: [Leo should not use the vacuum cleaner or handle the bins]. [Dad cannot do Thursday]. Add up the total minutes per person per week and make them within 15 minutes of each other. Show the table again.
  4. Step 4: Save it and print it

In Gemini, a response with a table has an Export to Sheets button at the bottom right of the table, which saves it as a new spreadsheet in Google Drive. Below the response, Share & export then Export to Docs saves it as a doc. In other apps, copy the table into a document and print it. Tables with images cannot be exported to Sheets in Gemini.

  5. Step 5: Swap jobs each week

When the week is over, ask the AI to rotate the jobs, so nobody is stuck with the worst one.

    Prompt to copy
Here is last week's chart: [paste the table]. Make next week's chart with the same rules, but rotate the jobs so each person gets different ones.

Common mistakes

  • Giving the AI full names, addresses or school details. First names or roles are enough.
  • Accepting the first chart without adding up the minutes. AI can say a split is fair when it is not, so check the totals (step 3).
  • Putting unsafe jobs on young children. You know your child best, so remove any job that is not right for them.
  • Forgetting busy days and shift work. Say them in the prompt, or the chart will ignore them.

Questions people ask

Which AI app is best for this?

Any of them. Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude can all write a table from a prompt. Gemini can export the table to Google Sheets, which our steps checked on Gemini's help page.

Do I need to sign in?

Gemini's help page says some features work without signing in, but to export you must be signed in. Check your app's own page for what a free account includes.

Can I print the chart?

Yes. Export it to Google Sheets or Docs in Gemini, or copy the table into any document, then print it.

What ages can do which jobs?

That is a family decision, so the AI should not decide it. Tell it the jobs you are happy for each child to do, and ask it to use only those.
